What I Know. Reminiscences of Five Years' Personal Attendance upon His Late Majesty King Edward the Seventh.
London: Mills & Boon, 1913.
First edition. viii, 364, + [4], 32 adverts: with a guarded tinted portrait drawing of the King as frontis. Pencilled note to front free endpaper: 'Given to me by Stamper - Dec 1913' followed by initials, probably 'ML'. Some quite obtrusive foxing to the first 20 pages, splash marks to p62-3 and p72-3, and some foxing to page edges throughout. In the original binding of navy cloth ruled and titled in gilt: front bright, joints rubbed, spine slightly dulled, crimped at the head and nicked at the foot. Very good firm copy. [In 1905 the author was abruptly taken into the King's service as his motor expert and engineer, in which capacity he accompanied him much of the time till his death. Stuffed with small anecdotes, and much discussion of cars and driving. It surprised me to learn that it was then considered normal for 'mischievous children' to throw stones at passing cars - even royal ones. Dornford Yates' first book.] Very Good.
