The Flowers of Milton.
Faversham, privately published, 1846. First edition. Hardcover. 30 tissue-guarded pages. Apart from the dedication to the Queen, which is printed in plain script, the book consists of Giraud's hand-coloured floral plates either illustrating passages from Milton, or serving as decorative title pages to the sections - Paradise Lost, Poems on Several Occasions, etc. Each has the identifier 'J.E.G. del et lith' below, and all were printed by Day & Haghe, lithographers to the Queen. The plates are bright, with no foxing. A few of them have at some time been detached, and have slight soiling to the edges, and any wear has been made good. An ownership name to the front free endpaper reads 'Mary St Birt [?], Faversham 1847' - Faversham also being where the artist locates herself on the Dedication page. 32x24cms / 12.5x9.5ins, all edges gilt, in the original binding of green cloth, boards ruled and decorated in blind, and titled to the front in gilt. The book was recently refurbished with new tissue guards and a new green cloth spine. A very nice copy. Very Good+. Item #18460100
