London: William Tegg, n.d. [c.1870]. A New and Complete Edition. Hardcover. xxxiv, [ii], 486, [2], [4] adverts. Many engravings in the text. Inner joints discreetly repaired. A few pages circa p333 have some foxing to the margin. p.xiii/xiv has an edge repair, and there is a little damage to the edge of p.255. Contents in very good order, with minimal other indications of age or use. The front free endpaper bears (all in ink) the lightly crossed-out ownership name 'Willy Rothenstein 1887', followed by the gift inscription 'To William Jellie esq. B.A. // In memory of the many happy hours I have spent with you in London // from [signed] Will Rothenstein // July 1888'; with, on the pastedown, a humorous ink caricature, perhaps a likeness of Jellie, with peasant hat and pipe, initialled WR, and captioned 'Och, a Paddy e'er was a sharrp wan.' Jellie, an Irishman, who went on to become a Unitarian minister of note, would have been about 22, while Rothenstein would have been about 16, and was to become famed for his portraits. In the recently refurbished original binding of green cloth, ruled and decorated in black, and titled in gilt. A very attractive sound bright copy, with a delightful provenance. Very Good+.
