New York: Harper & Brothers, 1882, 1878, 1878. 21st & 17th years of publication. Hardcover. Consecutively paginated, 1330pp, illustrated with maps, some folding, plus c.470pp of Indexes and advertisements. Three vols, each 7.4 x 5 ins, bound in red leather in wallet form, with map pockets in the covers and flaps for closure. 18 of the flimsy monochrome maps are present in the pockets: almost all are in very good condition, the exceptions being those of London and Paris. Three of those listed are missing, and some are duplicates. There is also an unlisted plan of the 1878 Paris Exposition. While a section concerns itself with travel in the US and Canada, the 'East' of the title ventures no further than Egypt, Syria, and Russia. The blank leaves preceding the titles to Vols 2 & 3 bear an 1878 ownership name, while this page has been removed from Vol I. The contents are fresh and clean, and the bindings have been professionally refurbished. A very attractive set, and invaluable for the US traveller setting out for 19th Century Europe. Very Good+.
