A Roving Commission.

London: G. Bell and Sons Ltd., 1937. First edition. Hardcover. [vi], 328pp. Contents bright, clean, and unmarked, with light tanning to endpapers and to the final text page. Newman's lively and informal reminiscences of his experiences more than 30 years earlier, both as a correspondent accompanying the forces which relieved the siege of the legations in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, and then travelling with Younghusband's mission to Lhasa in 1904. These are followed by tales from the North-West frontier some years later. He appears to have engaged candidly with everyone, and to have seen a considerable amount of action. Firm, in the original binding of bright blue cloth over thin boards, titled in white to the spine. Boards bright, corners sharp: spine fairly bright, small stain to top edge of lower board. In the protected pictorial dust jacket: front panel bright, with scuffs to the corners, spine dulled and frayed at the head with some loss, rear panel heavily tanned and foxed, and the flaps are foxed. A good, and jacketed copy, of a very scarce title. Very Good / good. Item #19370110
