London: John Snow, 1838. First edition (third thousand). xvi, 592pp. With a number of plates, including Baxter's frontis printed in oil colours, a foldout map of the Maritime Provinces of China, and in the appendix, a chronological table of Chinese history. Contents clean, though with edge stains to the title page and the slightly soiled frontis, and a small stain to the bottom margin continuing through the earlier part of the book. There is a small splash mark to the inner margins of pp238-239, and two corners have dog-ear creases. Map folds clean. De luxe binding: text block all edges gilt, bright, and with gorgeous red silk endpapers, the pastedowns framed by broad gilt-decorated turn-ins. Firm, in the original bottle-green morocco, decorated front and back with gilt curlicues, the spine with raised bands and decorated compartments, recently professionally refurbished with Japanese tissue. A beautiful copy. An early reader's pencilled appreciation on the last page has been left. [Contains more than one reference to the Chinese people's objections to westerners' hypocrisy in lecturing them on behaviour while conducting the opium trade.]. Item #18385090
