The Brigands of the Morea: A Narrative of the Captivity of Mr S. Soteropoulos. [In Two Volumes]
Mr S. Soteropoulos, chiefly translated from the Greek, by the Rev J. O. Bagdon:

The Brigands of the Morea: A Narrative of the Captivity of Mr S. Soteropoulos. [In Two Volumes]

London: Saunders, Otley, and Co., 1868. First edition. xiv, [2], 294, 32; [iv], 326. This is the true first issue, in two volumes, each with a splendid costume plate 'by a Greek artist' as frontis, showing a Greek Pallekaria in Moreote costume. Later issues appear to be textually identical, with no indication that they are re-issues, but have only a single, rather romantic, tinted lithograph frontis of a brigand scanning scenery; they are often bound as a single volume, and may not include a publisher's list. In the 1868 publishers' list which is at back of Vol I in the present copy, the current title is listed, in 2 vols, under 'New Books and New Editions'. Unlike a number of the other titles listed, it has no accompanying reviews, which suggests that it was being announced as a new publication. All of this is significant, as several authorities, having encountered only copies with a single tinted litho frontis, have taken and broadcast the view that a rumoured edition with two colour frontispieces is mythical. Well, apparently it isn't! [A copy was also listed in Francis Edwards' catalogue in 1965]. Condition: Minor soiling to prelims, contents very clean. 1967 ownership name to Vol I free endpaper. In the original bindings of blue pebble cloth, boards decorated in blind, spines titled and decorated in gilt. Firm, spines a little dulled, slight wear to ends. A good copy of the scarce first issue. Very Good.
