Man Ray: Photographs 1920-1934 Paris; Photographies 1920-1934 Paris.

Hartford Connecticut: James Thrall Soby: Random House, NY & Cahiers d'Art, Paris: n.d. [1934]. First edition [spuriously stated 'Second Edition']. [vi], 104 [+8], [ii]. Very good copy with head of binder damaged. Plates and text clean and unmarked, corners good; small tears to binder holes at spine ends. Residue of small pencilled price to corner of title page. Faint greying of some white page areas from offsetting. 31x24.5cms, in the original white plastic comb binding. The Man Ray colour photograph front cover is clean and complete, with minimal (c.1mm) scuffs to the edges, a crease across the upper corner, tiny creases adjacent to the spine, a few short rubbed striations to the top edge, and one or two lesser imperfections. The white rear cover has a few minor marks, a 5mm closed tear to the leading edge, and a small loss of laminate to the bottom corner. The top two circlets of the binder have gone, and the third is present but detached. Text in French and English throughout (German and English in the case of Duchamp). The 'Deuxieme Edition' / 'Second Edition' printed on the title pages of unsold (first edition) copies was the publisher's ruse in the hope of boosting sales. Man Ray's introduction is set at the beginning of the book, and the four contributors' texts, introducing the groupings of the photographs, are titled: The visages of woman; Men before the mirror; When things dream; and Rayographs 1921-1928. A legendary production - and a very satisfactory copy. Very Good.
