Egon Ronay recommends 175 eating places in and around London.
Egon Ronay: with a Foreword by Henry Sherek:

Egon Ronay recommends 175 eating places in and around London.

London: Egon Ronay Ltd., [1959]. First edition. 80-page stapled booklet 18.3x12cms, in thin card covers. Front cover design is red, and bears the shop label of the Fakenham garage which originally sold it. Advertisements for Ford cars to rear cover and inside covers. Slight foxing and soiling to both the title page and the centre fold (p40-41). Contents otherwise very clean: the covers, too, are surprisingly fresh. [nb: It appears plain from both the Foreword, and Ronay's Introduction, dated 1959, that this was his first foray into publishing a food guide. This suggests that the mention, in William Grimes' obituary of Ronay, and repeated elsewhere, of a 96-page book called Egon Ronay's Guide to British Eateries, supposedly his first book, and published in 1957, which sold 30,000 copies, is erroneous, at least in the matter of date, and perhaps also of title: I can find no record of an actual copy of that title; and is it likely, after such a success, that he would then produce a smaller booklet? Sherek's Foreword to the present book bemoans the lack of any such guide hitherto, and includes this: <...Mr Ronay's book, therefore, fills this vaccuum and it hoped that the surfeit of good restaurants will spread all over the United Kingdom, so that the author, himself a brilliant international restaurateur, will be encouraged to write a sort of superior Guide Michelin. At present, outside London, he would not need many pages to describe good eating-places. This abysmal dearth in the provinces can surely not go on for much longer...>] . A very good copy of an extremely scarce item. Very Good+.
