Winston S. Churchill:
Great Contemporaries.

London: Thornton Butterworth, 1937. First edition. 335pp, illustrated. Contents in very fresh condition, a few pages having very minor spotting to margins: a few spots to the fore-edge of the text block, rather more to the toned top edge. 1937 school prize label to front free endpaper. In the original binding of blue cloth titled in gilt, fresh, sharp, bright and clean: spine slightly blunted at the foot: some sunning to the top centimetre at the head has been professionally tinted and is now barely discernible. In the protected unclipped orange dust jacket, almost without loss. Front and back panels are clean and bright, with tiny chips at the corners, and the back panel has a couple of creases towards the top edge. The spine is a little faded, with faint scuffs to the surface, some fraying at the head, and a one-inch closed tear to the head of the lower joint. Some very light wear to the foot of the spine. With the publishers' yellow Home University Library advertising bookmark still laid in - echoing the advertisement for the series on the rear flap. An exceptionally well-preserved copy. Very Good+ in very good+ dust-jacket.

Martin Gilbert:
Plough My Own Furrow: The Story of Lord Allen of Hurtwood as told through his own writings and correspondence. [Clifford Allen].

London: Longmans, 1965. First edition. xiv, 442pp, illustrated with photographs. This is a prepublication copy with the publisher's job label on the front pastedown, giving the specification for the binding, and each of the plates has been checked with a biro slash or cross. Text clean and unmarked. Faint soiling to closed edges of text block. Firm, in the binding of black cloth with gilt spine title on a cerulean lettering-piece, bright. 'File Copy' blindstamped to lower corner of front board. Small scuffs to corners, foot of spine blunted. In the protected unclipped blue dust jacket. This is severely creased and scuffed to the bottom edge, and somewhat to the head of the spine, with further creasing to the back panel. There is negligible loss, and the portrait of Allen on the front is still good. The publisher's job number '1923' is written on the spine. A viable copy of a scarce title. Another of Britain's mistreated heroes. VG in poor dust-jacket.
