Much on hounds, hawking, angling, fighting-cocks and gardening in this volume. Faintly-pencilled 1847 ownership name on half-title, and later one in ink to the front pastedown. Contents clean, with a few foxing spots at the beginning of the book, and a couple of tiny wormholes towards the end. 12mo, 16.9x10cms, in contemporary full calf with raised bands, boards ruled in gilt, with the patina and rubbing from use, professionally refurbished. Good firm copy. VG.

[iv] (two engraved title pages - see below) + iii + (4-)249 + [7] index +[4] adverts. The 'Dogs' section begins with an introduction at p.137. The attractive engraved title page to the 'Dogs' section is bound in as p[ii] at the front of the book, and continues: 'Containing a description of every disease to which they are generally liable, and the mode of cure: being the result of nearly twenty years' diligent attention to the subject. Together with a very copious detail of the symptoms and progress of madness in dogs, with a preventive remedy both for the human and brute. By Delabere Blaine. 1810.' (no printer or publisher stated.) The first title page and the final (advertisement) leaf have some soiling and a little wear to the edges. Contents very good. 12mo, in very nice new binding of mid green Victorian cloth, ruled in blind to the front, spine ruled in gilt with gilt title on dark green lettering-piece, and date on black at base of spine. Very nice copy. VG+.

London: Blackie and Son, [1922]. First and presumed only composite edition. [iv], 34 (of 36) + 4 leaves from a different edition bound in to complete the verses and illustrations to the final tale. The immensely characterful plates are all clean and bright. Some light soiling to margins, and tissue repairs to three closed edge tears: one of these is stained from former sellotape. Printed slip tipped in to supply missing lines where surface adhesion has damaged one verse of 'Fishermen'. While the book is folio, 340x255mm, printed with verses beneath the plates, the added pages are shorter (276mm), with the verses facing the plates and supplemented by an illustration in line: the plates of both editions are the same size (240x177mm). In the original boards with onlaid illustration from 'Huntsmen': picture scuffed, boards soiled and stained with wear to corners: firm, with new cloth spine. A title usually worn to bits. Very nice and effective rebuild of a defective copy. Hold on to your reins/ guns/ fishing rods! VG.
