With the commendatory note by Hawksmoor and others, and the 8-page Preface. Takes the alphabet up to HY, with an 11-page supplement. VG+.

Contents clean, although with a considerable amount of offsetting. 1952 ownership name on ffep. Small nick to bottom edges c.p230-p280, where something had been pressed into edge of text block. Tall quarto, 8.5 x 5.25 ins, in contemporary half calf with marbled boards: boards slightly scuffed, spine ruled gilt and with a red label, joints restored with Japanese tissue. Rare: a very nice firm copy. Very Good+.

A little foxing to the plates, text clean. Original yellow endpapers, with professional repairs to hinges. Large quarto, in contemporary grained brown cloth ruled in blind: rebacked, with the original spine with faded gilt title relaid. A very nice copy. Very Good.

'Poor Richard':
Poor Richard's Farmers' & Commercial Pocket Book for 1845.

London: W. Strange, 1844. Original printing. 32pp, illustrated with a guarded scenic frontis 'The Village' and numerous woodcuts, with much rustic fun in the lively headpieces for each month. With something of the character of an almanack, packed with informative text and advice: various tables, sundry articles, a section listing hundreds of Fairs and Markets in England and Wales, and another with Agricultural and Domestic Recipes. Also advertisements for various nostrums, including Poor Richard's Stomach Pills, capitalising on the name of Franklin's Poor Richard publications of the 18th Century. Discovered with only soiled blank leaves forming front and back: these have been bound in, and bear an early ownership name. Some staining to frontis: pages good. 16x10cms, all edges gilt. Conserved in a new binding of marbled boards with brown cloth spine and paper label. Extremely uncommon. Very Good.

Pictorial surfaces good, although with some soiling and small stains to borders; and perhaps half the plates have a narrow strip of wear and darkening to one or two edges - having at some time been detached and protruding. Text good, with occasional minor soiling. All edges gilt. Quarto, in the original binding of green cloth elaborately decorated in gilt, and with a dark core representing a cross-section of the cable. At some time professionally rebacked, with green endpapers, and with the original spine laid down. A good firm copy. Very Good.

The main catalogue appears to be 1908; while 'September 1919' is printed at the foot of p.400. With wondrous thousands of illustrations of wares (some in colour), and a few photographs of workers and factory. Contents bright and in very good condition. Title page has some creasing, p345-6 has a picture cut out, and p389/90 has had some damage. A tab has been attached to the edge of p[441]. Quarto, firm, in the original gilt-embossed brown boards, at some time rebacked with a spine of brown buckram titled in gilt. An almost entirely pre-first world war edition, with Victorian design still very much in evidence. A very good copy. Very Good.
