Front pastedown of Vol I bears a 1945 gift inscription to the author Joyce Cary, from whose collection these came. Pages mostly good: some have grubby marks, chiefly at the outset of the tale, some have straightened dog-ear creases, a few have tiny closed tears, and there is some foxing to the last few pages of Vol II. A few pencilled marginalia, perhaps Cary's, have been left. In the original bindings of light blue cloth, upper boards blocked in black, lower boards in blind, and spines in gilt. Both volumes firm, and darkened and rubbed with use, with a brighter area on the upper board of each, perhaps once protected by 19thC library labels (there are no other library indications), and with marks to the lower boards of each suggesting that there may, in some equally remote past, have been a spill.
